    GORDON YOUNG's PUTTING COMPETITION

Gordon Young - the Estoril Pro and long associated with the RBCGS sponsors the annual putting competition.  He knows our game better than we do even if he hasn't met us.  Can you do a full round of golf with fewer than 36 putts?  Gordon would be sceptical. So this competition is definitely for you to prove him wrong and improve your putting at the same time!

So have a go - it might prove the beginning of a new journey in your golf!!

    Location:                  Estoril Golf Club

    Date: From March to November

Holder of the Trophy: Michael Deignan

    THE COMPETITION

    • This competition is to be played over 18 holes of putting.
    • The venue for all the matches will be the practice green between the Estoril GC
    • The competition is scheduled for THE FINAL to take place by the end of November.  The Draw will set target dates for completion of each round.
    • The player at the top of each draw has the responsibility to contact their opponent(s) to arrange a time for the match within the timescales of the overall tournament.
    • Results of matches should be posted on the draw posted on the noticeboard at the Clubhouse and e-mailed to the Captain.

    THE MATCH RULES

The normal R&A rules apply, in addition to which:

    1. Matches will be played off scratch.
    2. No “gimmes” are permitted.
    3. The player whose name appears at the top of the draw will have the honour on the first hole.
    4. Matches will start from a point selected by the players, as close to the opening of the practice green, nearest to the 1st tee, as is feasible (depending on green condition).
    5. The first hole will be played towards a pin chosen by the first to play
    6. The honour passes alternately between players .  A two ball will see each player choosing 9 holes while a three ball will see players choosing 6 holes each.
    7. In a 3-ball STROKE PLAY prevails.  The player with the fewest total strokes is the winner and the runner up is the person with the second lowest stroke score.  So count your strokes. You must play each hole out.  A 3-putt becomes a heavy burden against your score.
    8.  In a two-ball MATCH PLAY prevails.

We are currently looking for a sponsor for this tournament as our partner Victoria Seguros has decided to end our longstanding relationship.

This should be nevertheless be a great tournament that offers a challenge in the art of simplicity -using a maximum of 4 clubs and a putter.

Start thinking about which clubs you'll use on the day.  YOU CAN USE 4 CLUBS (of your choice) and a PUTTER.   It's a great challenge and many have discovered that one doesn't really need any more than that!  Average scores last year were as good as any other tournament. This is a fun format and so the scores will not count for handicap purposes but will go to the Order of Merit awards.

    A TEXAS SCRAMBLE TOURNAMENT

Texas Scramble is a form of team competition in golf. In its purest, simplest form, all members of the team, which is normally made up of 3 or 4 players, tee off.

After all have teed off, the team decides which drive is the best. From there, all members of the team place their golf balls where the chosen drive ended up, with all members playing a second shot from this spot.

From these second shots, one is chosen and all play a third shot from there - and so on until the ball is holed. Each team returns one score for each hole and the team with the lowest score for the round wins.

The James Rawes Group, which today is a Lisbon based Port Agents, Claims, Survey and Settling Agents Group, was born in the early 1860’s from a partnership between two British gentlemen, Richard Knowles and James Rawes Jnr, who set up business together as traders in Lisbon under the name of “Knowles, Rawes & Co”.  In 1866 the company was nominated Agents for the Royal Mail Lines, who at the time operated a regular service from the UK via Lisbon to/from South America as well as Agents for The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (now P&O Cruises) our Lisbon Office has been Agents for Lloyd’s of London since October of 1873.

In January of 1896 the company’s name was changed to “James Rawes & Co” and in 1946 to “James Rawes & Ca Lda”.  At the end of 2009 it was decided, for commercial reasons that the structure of the company should change and as of March 2010 James Rawes became a Holding Company under the name of James Rawes SGPS, Lda overseeing  three companies; James Rawes – Navegação, Lda (Shipping Division), James Rawes – Peritagens, Lda (Surveys and Claims Division) and James Rawes – Turismo, Lda (Tour Operator Division). THE ROYAL BRITISH CLUB GOLFING SOCIETY

The Royal British Club, Lisbon, Portugal, was founded in 1888 and obtained its royal patronage in 1903 after a state visit to Portugal by King Edward VII. His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was the patron of the Club until recently but sadly has now passed. His/Her Excellency the British Ambassador to Portugal is our President.

THE ROYAL BRITISH CLUB GOLFING SOCIETY

The Royal British Club Golfing Society owes its origin to the wish, in 1973 of the Club’s Honorary Treasurer d’Arcy Orders to increase Club activities. He wrote to a fellow Committee member Alan Jones, knowing he was a dedicated golfer, and suggested the formation of a Club Golfing Society.

Alan Jones supported the idea, arranged for his company, Cel-Cat, to donate a trophy and d’Arcy agreed to provide a cup himself. (Both these original trophies continue to be played for). Alan and d’Arcy elected themselves Captain and Honorary Secretary/Treasurer respectively!

The Inaugural Meeting was held at Estoril Golf Club on 4th April, 1974. Twenty-two members – including one lady member- competed for the Cel-Cat Cup.
