    3. The player whose name appears at the top of the draw will have the honour on the first hole.
    4. Matches will start with a coin toss to determine who nominates the first hole to aim for and from a point selected by that player.
    5. Each player then putts toward the selected hole in accordance with normal putting rules till all putts have been made.
    6. The honour to select next hole and lead the way then passes alternately between players .  A two ball will see each player choosing 9 holes while a three ball will see players choosing 6 holes each.

    ROYAL BRITISH CLUB CUP TOURNAMENT

The Royal British Club Cup saw its first tournament in 2005, which was won by A. Besselin. Since then it has been one of the highlights of our annnual calendar of events.

THE ROYAL BRITISH CLUB GOLFING SOCIETY

The Royal British Club, Lisbon, Portugal, was founded in 1888 and obtained its royal patronage in 1903 after a state visit to Portugal by King Edward VII. His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was the patron of the Club until recently but sadly has now passed. His/Her Excellency the British Ambassador to Portugal is our President.

THE ROYAL BRITISH CLUB GOLFING SOCIETY

The Royal British Club Golfing Society owes its origin to the wish, in 1973 of the Club’s Honorary Treasurer d’Arcy Orders to increase Club activities. He wrote to a fellow Committee member Alan Jones, knowing he was a dedicated golfer, and suggested the formation of a Club Golfing Society.

Alan Jones supported the idea, arranged for his company, Cel-Cat, to donate a trophy and d’Arcy agreed to provide a cup himself. (Both these original trophies continue to be played for). Alan and d’Arcy elected themselves Captain and Honorary Secretary/Treasurer respectively!

The Inaugural Meeting was held at Estoril Golf Club on 4th April, 1974. Twenty-two members – including one lady member- competed for the Cel-Cat Cup.

    A TEXAS SCRAMBLE TOURNAMENT

Texas Scramble is a form of team competition in golf. In its purest, simplest form, all members of the team, which is normally made up of 3 or 4 players, tee off.

After all have teed off, the team decides which drive is the best. From there, members of the team place their golf balls where the chosen drive ended up and play their next shot from this spot. The player whose shot is selected does NOT play the next shot. From these second shots, one is chosen and team members (excluding the player whose shot was selected) play a third shot from there - and so on until the ball reaches the green. Once the ball reaches the green, all players are permitted to putt till the ball is holed. Each team returns one score for each hole and the team with the lowest score for the round wins. Refer to the detailed Format Rules which will be sent with the draw.

Each team member must have a minimum number of drives selected over the 18 holes in the tournament in line with the format rules.

The Newstead Cup Trophy is the new prize for this longstanding tournament format in the RBCGS Calendar and our 2025 winner JP READMAN is now our new sponsor for this very popular event.

This format offers a challenge in the art of simplicity - using a maximum of 4 clubs and a putter.

Start thinking about which clubs you'll use on the day.  YOU CAN USE 4 CLUBS (of your choice) and a PUTTER.   It's a great challenge and many have discovered that one doesn't really need any more than that!

This is a fun format and so the scores will NOT count for handicap purposes but will go to the Order of Merit awards.
